From Pastor Peter 28-Feb-2014

Dear Grace Family,

This Sunday: Romans 7

We moved into Romans 7 last Sunday where Pastor Brad plans on spending three weeks on verses 1-6.  Since our natural tendency is to still try and live the Christian life by the law, Paul tells us about our new relationship to the law as Christians.  Last Sunday we saw how our focus should be on our relationship with Christ as our new ‘Husband.’  This Sunday we'll see another way we can keep from getting sucked back ‘under the law’ and into legalism.  Consider preparing yourself in the Word by reading Romans 7:1-6, maybe even reading it in a few different translations.  It's easy to do at sites like

Next Sunday: "We Say When" at Florence Campus!

Do come to church at Newport THIS SUNDAY, but don't do that next Sunday, 09-Mar...'cause you'll be all alone (aww). Sunday we'll be heading over to our Florence campus to worship with the rest of our church family for our very first "We Say When" Sunday.  While everyone else is changing their clocks on Saturday night, you can leave yours alone and choose to lose the hour some other time during the day instead of while you're catching Z's.  Wanna read more about it?  Have at it by clicking HERE.

Still not too late to jump into "Grace For You!"

We kicked off another "Grace For You" class last Sunday.  Even if you missed it, you can still jump in this Sunday.  Maybe you're considering becoming a member of our church, or maybe you're just new to Grace and would like a more detailed explanation about what we believe & what we do.  If so, this is for you.  Join us in theater 2 at 9 AM.  You can always show up unannounced, but we'll get you a nifty book if you click HERE and let us know you'll be there.

Have a great weekend!

Love in Christ,

Pastor Peter

Outreach Update: Newport Intermediate School 11-Feb

Last year, God afforded us the opportunity to serve children & parents from our community by facilitating a "Read-In" at Newport Intermediate School (one block south of the Levee).  Students and parents come back to the school on a weekday evening and come to the school cafeteria.  On each table is a basket of books, and we use the opportunity to read with students.  Sometimes they read to us, other times we read to them, and sometimes neither of us read and we talk about motorcycles while eating the pizza dinner we feed them.

This is the 3rd time we've done this, and this time was unique in that we had 221 students show up.  This was WAY more than had ever shown up before, and WAY more than we'd expected, but a blessed "problem" to have!  We ordered more pizza, served the group in three different shifts, and had the opportunity to get face time with families who live in the vicinity of the school, most within walking distance.

Towards the end of our time together, we were given a manila envelope.  Inside were letters from students, thanking us for our ministry among them.  Zach Lux & I quickly read through them with misty eyes and were so thankful for the opportunity the Lord afforded us.

One of the things I shared at our last forum is my hope & prayer to "grow deep" in our relationship with this school, the staff, the families we can reach through our time with them.  I'm so thankful to God for bringing so many to us, allowing us to serve them and model the selfless, sacrificial love of our Savior.

This is an opportunity you'll want to take advantage of the next time it comes around (next date is TBD, but we're trying to do this about once/month).  Come with your Small Group, or come on your own, anytime from 5p-7p. It's a great chance to show the love of Christ to those in our community, praying God will bless our efforts to the praise of the glory of His grace.

Love in Christ.

Dear Grace Family,

Visitation & Funeral Service Info for Drew Landis

Thanks for praying for Andrea Landis & her family.  If interested, visitation and funeral details can be found HERE.

This Sunday: Romans 7

On to Romans 7.  Paul talks to us about our new relationship to the law as Christians, because our natural tendency is to still try and live the Christian life by the law.  When you do that it almost always leads to life-choking, joy-robbing legalism.  We don’t want to go there.  Pastor Brad plans on spending three weeks on just the first six verses, so consider reading Romans 7:1-6 over the weekend to prepare your heart & mind for the sermon on Sunday.

"We Say When" Sunday, 09-Mar

Every year, we're reminded of the fact we live in a sin-cursed & fallen world when we lose an hour of sleep on Time Change Sunday (I know...I just shivered, too).  Well, we're not gonna take it anymore.  No sir.

Here's what we're gonna do...

On Sun, 09-Mar, we're going to have a combined worship service at our Florence campus.  And you know what we're gonna do?  Actually, you know what we're NOT gonna do?  We're not gonna change our clocks until after church that Sunday.  That's right!  We're just not gonna lose the hour of sleep.

In the words of William Wallace, "They may take our lives, but they will never take our sleeping!"

It's a lesser known quote.  Whatever.  Some more details are HERE.

Ladies' Bible Study starts next Wed!

Ladies' Bible Study is back and scheduled to start next Wed, 26-Feb at 9 AM at our Florence campus.  Click HERE for details and to register for a class.

See you on Sunday!

Love in Christ,

Pastor Peter

Dear Grace Family,

Bring back those Baby Bottles!

Remember those baby bottles we handed out a few weeks ago?  We need 'em back...and chock full of money!  Cash, change, & checks...stuff it all in there and bring it back to church THIS SUNDAY and we'll collect them & get them back to New Hope Center.  Proceeds from this fundraiser are a major portion of their annual budget each year, so prayerfully consider what you might give.

Best Read-In ever w/ 221 students!

This Tuesday we had another outreach at the Newport Intermediate School.  We served pizza, read books, & engaged students & parents in great conversations.  I have a few families on my heart from our time together.  I'll tell you more about it in a post next week.  In the meantime, praise God for having blessed our time there, and keep an eye peeled for the next opportunity (hopefully in March?  We'll announce as soon as we work it out with the school).

Ladies' Bible Study is back!

Back in November, the Elders were thrilled to announce that Arlene Greenwood would be coordinating the Women's Ministry.  Ladies' Bible Study is back and scheduled to start on Wed, 26-Feb at 9 AM.  Click HERE for details and to register for a class.

See you on Sunday!

Love in Christ,

Pastor Peter

Free Romans 5:1 Printable

Have you seen the verses on Pinterest, blogs, or other places online that you can print?  Well, we asked Pastor Brad (who clearly is pretty jazzed about the book of Romans) which verse would be most impactful if we truly brought it online in our lives.  He picked Romans 5:1.

We created this free printable so that you can put it on your wall.  Or at your cube.  Or on your mirror.  Whatever it is you'd do with an 8.5x11" verse.

Hit the printer button in the upper left of the document.  VoilĂ .  Some free wall decor.

Ham/Nye Debate Q&A discussion tomorrow: 5 Reasons to Go

As I mentioned yesterday, our very own Roger Patterson will be joining us at church tomorrow to facilitate a discussion about the debate that took place earlier this week.  Why do I think you should go?  Here are a few reasons to consider:

It's a great change to meet & interact with one of our Elders.
There are 9 of us, but only 2 regularly go to Newport every week (Mark McFadden & myself).  Come meet Roger!

Roger loves Jesus.
Just about anytime I'm with Roger, I come home talking to Sarah about his love for the Lord and how that affects his life.  God uses him to inspire me to grow & change as a child of God, a husband, a dad, and a pastor.

Roger knows his stuff.
He taught high school science.  He works for Answers in Genesis.  He's authored books (Evolution Exposed - biology & earth science versions).  He's written curricula.  Maybe he does small parties for a nominal fee (I dunno).  Bottom line, he's an interesting guy that you'll enjoy meeting and learning from.

Roger loves evangelism.
Roger hasn't forgotten the amazing grace of God that saved him from the bondage of sin and false religion (he's a former Mormon-turned-atheist).  He spends much of his discretionary time sharing the Gospel, praying with people, and striving to be a light in dark places.  He is excited about the opportunities afforded by this historic debate to tell others about Jesus Christ, and I'm sure he'll tell you how he plans on doing that.  Maybe you'll leave with some ways you can do that, too!

God uses times like these to bless us.
I got to watch the debate with a friend.  We were blessed to hear how God used the truth of His Word in each others' lives.  That's one of the many blessings of what it means to be one of many parts of the body of Christ!  I trust this time of Q&A and discussion will bless you, and your participation can bless others, too.

Missed the debate?  Click below to check it out.

God bless,

Pastor Peter

Dear Grace Family,

It's a pretty full & busy Sunday at church this weekend, so be sure to read it all!

Before church: Q&A discussion re: Ken Ham/Bill Nye debate - 9 AM

There's lots of buzz about the debate between Ken Ham & Bill Nye that took place earlier this week (miss it?  Dry your can see it HERE for a limited time).  Roger Patterson is one of our Elders, and also serves on staff at Answers in Genesis.  He'll be facilitating a discussion and Q&A re: the debate in the Community Room (opposite GameWorks) before church on Sunday at 9 AM.  Stop by to chat, and especially to learn about the evangelistic opportunities presented by this historic debate.

During church: Are you really free?

Pastor Brad will be taking us into the latter half of Romans 6.  Consider preparing by reading Romans 6:14-23 over the weekend.

After church: Refer someone to "Connect"...or join 'em!

I love feeding people.  I love talking with people.  This is why I love "Connect."

It's especially for those who are newest among us, and it's right after church THIS SUNDAY in the Community Room, just downstairs from the theater (opposite GameWorks).

Know someone new among us?  Send 'em.

Meet someone new this Sunday?  Send 'em (it's never too late).

Hey...even better, bring 'em and enjoy the free lunch with them!  We're always ready for walk-ins, but we'd love to get as accurate a headcount as possible beforehand, so click HERE for more details and to register.

Have a great weekend!

Love in Christ,

Pastor Peter
